Road Trips in France

So, you’ve been to Paris and maybe to Nice. Although they are fabulous places, there is unbelievably more to see and do all across France. You can take trains, which are a wonderful way to go. But what about a ROAD TRIP, when you’re the boss and you can decide how long you’ll be where, access the little villages on the cliff-side without having to Uber, or change your plans on a dime? Does that sound like fun to you?

But, Where To Go?

The regions of France are immensely varied, colorful, and unforgettable. Think of Brittany, with rocky beaches, crispy crepes, small towns containing large castles, butter-infused treats… think of inland Provence, home of cliff-side villages, lavender fields, Roman ruins. Think of tooling along the Spanish-French border in your rented car, following a trail of vineyards, beaches, Catalan culture, and the Pyrenees Mountains in the distance.

But How do you Plan a Road Trip?

That’s easy… with a compact guide loaded with information for a fantastic road trip on one of nine of the most stunning regions of France. Discover France your way, but with a little guidance.

A few years back, I started posting about various road trips. After all, they’re a great way to see the country. Then, I compiled some of these trips into a book, added a whole lot more, and it became Hit the Road: 9 Road Trip Itineraries Across France. Though I knew a lot about each area, I was determined to follow each road trip, so I began, one at a time. As I did, I knew there was so much more to add. So, I added 50% for the second edition. But there was still more. So I have just added 60% more information to the book, many more photos, and small maps of the circuit for each road trip. (And did I mention it is compact?)

Here’s what it covers:

Alsace

The Luberon (think Cliffside villages…)

West of Avignon

Bordeaux

Brittany

Burgundy

Normandy

Central France (With Loire Valley castles)

France-Spain Border

This book is now available for your 2026 travels! (or for holiday gift-giving!)

Hit the Road in France: 9 Road Trips across France.

It’s available in paperback and in eBook format.

(At the time of this writing, it’s available on Amazon in both formats. I’m working on the steps to get it onto the Oliver’s France Store and on other platforms (Apple, Barnes & Noble, Google, etc) as well.

Hit the Road in France… the NEW edition

Discover the amazing variety France offers as you hit the open highway. Explore and experience your own adventure. You’ll have 9 full itineraries all over France. Try one or two, then plan others for future vacations. These done-for-you itineraries make your planning easier because they give you the “bones” of your trip. After that, go crazy filling in the fun details. You’ll find plenty of suggestions in each section. A bit of the content of this book originally appeared on Oliver’s France. I expanded that, added more road trips, and created this book. But I knew I wanted to expand it still further, then expanded it again, adding even more helpful information to create this revised and expanded version. It’s more helpful and practical, but still easy to pack along for your trip.
