Dinan: A Treasure in Brittany

Dinan is my favorite town in Brittany. In fact, it was the first post I wrote for Oliver’s France. Enjoy it again and make plans to go! There are many rolling hills and peaceful landscapes in Brittany. Even here in the midst of this lush, unspoiled land, there are towns that require a visit. Dinan is one of these. It is about 4 hours by train from Paris, and around an hour from St. Malo and Le Mont Saint Michel.…

A Tour Through Western Brittany

In my last post, I gave you a suggested circuit through eastern Brittany. This time, we’ll cover western Brittany, where you’ll encounter wild, rocky coastlines, lush pastureland, and unforgettable villages. If you’re starting off in Paris, think about renting a car in St. Brieuc to return in Vannes or Lorient (to the south at the end of your circuit.) This will save a few hours of drive time from Paris to Brittany. That way you’ll focus on your experiences instead…

Hidden Beaches in Brittany, France

Up on Brittany’s northwest coast, you’ll find one of the most beautiful coastlines in France. The Côte de Granit Rose, or the Pink Granite Coast, is waiting for you, with beaches you may have never heard of. I call them hidden beaches because many people outside of France don’t know about them, but they are very popular with French visitors. To attract you further, these towns and beaches are smaller, cooler, and less crowded than the larger beaches of the…

St. Malo: A Treasure on the North Coast

St. Malo is an intriguing walled city perched on the northwest coast of France. I’d heard of it for years (people pronounced in French like: Samma-low), and I finally had the chance to go. It faces England across the Channel, and sometimes the winds of the Atlantic will make it chilly, even in summer. Still it is SO worthwhile to visit. It isn’t far from Dinan and Dinard, two nearby towns worth seeing. You can hit all 3 on a…
