A French Garden: The Loire Valley

The Loire Valley offers an abundance of reasons to visit. Many people think of the sumptuous châteaux that dot the countryside. Those fabulous structures dwell in a lush landscape once coveted by kings and nobles. It’s more like a garden beyond your fondest imagination.

This area is called the Garden of France for good reason. It’s one of France’s bread baskets, with a highly developed regional gastronomy you won’t want to miss. It’s also a region of vineyards, and is one of the premier wine regions in France.

Like a bountiful garden, life is tranquil here. Towns bustle, filled with open markets, shops, ancient walls, and medieval castles.

These towns are smaller than big urban centers of France, but as vibrant and appealing, offering plenty to do and see. The land is generally flat, perfect for hiking and biking. This calm region in central France is worth discovering.

Do any of these aspects appeal to you and make you want to reserve your flight right now? I understand! One additional feature: The Loire Valley is just over an hour southwest of Paris. So you don’t have to choose. Of course, you’ll want to allow at least a few days to take it in.

It’s worth a separate vacation to experience everything. I have a tool to help you plan the perfect road trip through the Loire Valley, my updated 2026 guidebook, A French Garden: the Loire Valley.  In it, you’ll find a summary of the best things to see and do across the Loire Valley. You won’t lack ideas, you won’t get lost, and you’ll always know where you’re going, thanks to maps, historical details (though not too many), and excursions with current pricing and hours. In addition, there are suggested restaurants and hotels, and seven sample itineraries you can use as-is or as a framework to develop your own trip. It’s compact and easy to take along, packed with useful information to help you have a wonderful trip.

Where is the Loire Valley?

Many people aren’t quite sure where the Loire Valley is located or what attractions it holds. Or if they have heard of it, they know only of the castles, but not the myriad other activities and treasures that await those who visit. In addition to touring the stunning castles, which, of course, you’ll want to do, there are many other sights and experiences to enjoy.

Have you considered drifting above the countryside in a hot-air balloon, exploring an underground mushroom farm, or spending the night in a château? These experiences, and many others, can provide unique memories you won’t easily find elsewhere.

You’ll also be glad to know that prices for hotels, admissions, and excursions have remained relatively stable in recent years.

The Loire Valley still offers excellent value and, with fewer crowds than Paris, a more relaxed way to experience France.

Each time I update this guide to the Loire Valley, I’m reminded what an extraordinary destination it is.
